Southampton 3-1 Burnley – Rating the Clarets
Burnley were sent home with nothing to show for their efforts yesterday as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat on the south coast against an impressive Southampton side.
The Clarets had a fairly good first-half, killing Saints’ momentum and ensuring that the tempo was dictated by them.
However, it all fell apart in the second-half for Sean Dyche and his side as they were on the receiving end of an unstoppable attacking onslaught from the hosts.
Charlie Austin scrambled home a goal early on in the half from a corner that just wasn’t defended well enough to give the home side a 1-0 victory.
Nathan Redmond doubled the advantage shortly after Burnley failed to clear their lines from a corner yet again, driving the ball home very well on the half volley.
Saints piled on the misery in efficient fashion again as Charlie Austin bagged his second of the game with a coolly taken penalty.
Sam Vokes did manage to get himself on the score sheet as he converted a penalty late on but it proved to be just a consolation as the travelling Clarets endured a miserable journey back.
Here are my match ratings from yesterday’s disappointing defeat on the south coast to Claude Puel’s men.
